Closing an in-ground pool

— Simple guide

Inground Pool Closing Video

1. 🧪 Prepare water and equipment
Close the pool as late as possible, ideally when the temperature drops below 12°C.

Clean the pool thoroughly: remove leaves, dirt, and debris.

Check that the water is clean and balanced (pH, chlorine, etc.).

Prepare your closing material:

Winterizing kit (wintercide and antifreeze)

Plugs for water returns and skimmer

Filter cleaner

Garden hose, leaf vacuum or blower (for hoses)

Winter canvas

2. 📉 Lower the water level
Lower the water level to about 6 inches below the lowest water return.

3. 🧴 Add Wintercide
Pour the wintercide into the water.

It helps prevent the formation of algae and bacteria during winter.

4. 💨 Empty and protect the pipes
⚠️ Essential step to prevent pipes from freezing and cracking.

Use a blower or reverse vacuum to blow water out of the pipes (returns, skimmer, drain if possible).

Afterwards :

Add a little antifreeze to each pipe.

Seal each opening with a winterizing plug.

For the skimmer:

Insert a floating sock (Pool Noodle) or an empty container to absorb the pressure of the gel.

5. 🔧 Protect equipment
Pump:

Unplug it, empty the water inside and store it in a dry, heated place.

Filter:

Empty it by removing the drainage plugs.

Clean it with a filter cleaner.

Also remove the pressure gauge (manometer) if present.

6. 🧼 Install the winter canvas
Clean the canvas with a mild product.

Place it on the pool.

Secure it securely to the ground anchors.
