To clean a bottom drain, start by increasing the flow through it: close the skimmer and fully open the drain valve so the pump can draw water from the bottom. Regular maintenance of the filter and pump also helps prevent debris from building up and clogging the drain.

The installation of a main drain is done during the pool assembly process. The drain is placed perfectly centered on the bottom, the plumbing is connected with flexible PVC pipe or pipe leading to the skimmer, and then everything is covered with sand or pool liner material to protect the pool's edge. The liner is then installed on top. The drain must be watertight, securely fastened, and properly aligned to ensure good water circulation.
