Properly balancing your pool water is essential for keeping it clear, healthy, and enjoyable for swimming. The right balance of pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness not only protects your equipment, but also optimizes the effectiveness of disinfectant products. To increase alkalinity, use an Alkalinity Plus product. Pour it around the pool with the pump running. Retest after 1 hour. The goal is to reach between80 and 120 ppmfor swimming pools.

To lower the alkalinity, add pH Minus in small doses, always in the same spot (ideally in the current towards the bottom). Then let the pump circulate the water. When the pH drops too low, raise it with pH Plus. Repeat this process until the pH returns to between 80 and 120 ppm.

Low alkalinity often results from heavy rainfall, acid shock treatment, overdosing on pH reducer, or simply very soft fill water. When alkalinity is low, the pH becomes unstable and fluctuates constantly, making the water difficult to balance.

To reduce water hardness, there is no common chemical product: you must dilute the pool water by partially draining it and adding fresh water. Excessive hardness can lead to white deposits, cloudy water, and damage to equipment.

Use a calcium hardness increasing product. Dissolve it in a bucket of warm water (be careful: the solution will get hot), then slowly pour it into the pool with the pump running. The ideal area for a pool is generally between200 and 300 ppm.

Fill a large bucket with lukewarm water, gradually add the water hardness increaser, stir, and allow it to dissolve completely. Caution: the reaction may release heat. Then pour the solution around the pool with the pump running.

The stabilizer must be kept between30 and 60 ppmBelow 20 ppm, chlorine breaks down too quickly in sunlight. Above 80 ppm, it becomes less effective, which can make the water difficult to clarify.

Add the stabilizer (cyanuric acid) directly into the skimmer. Let the filtration run continuously until completely dissolved, which may take several hours or days. Then retest and adjust as needed.
