Regular spa maintenance guide

Whether you have a new spa or have been enjoying it for several years, it is crucial to understand the maintenance steps to keep it in the best possible condition for as long as possible. This guide includes advice from Trévi's maintenance capsule to help you maximize your bathing pleasure.

1. Filling: a crucial step

Filling your spa is not as simple as putting the hose in the water. To prevent air pockets from forming, which could interfere with the proper functioning of your pumps, it is essential to follow these instructions carefully:

  • Where to place the hose: Insert the end of the hose into the compartment where your filter cartridges are located.
  • Objective: This method allows the pipes to be filled at the same time as the spa. Once the pumps are running, everything will work properly.

2. Maintaining filter cartridges

Whether you have one or two cartridges, maintaining them is vital for water quality.

Each week

Rinse the cartridge thoroughly with clean water.

How do you do this?

Remove the cartridges, rinse them thoroughly, and put them back in place.

Every 3 to 6 months

Clean the cartridge thoroughly.

How do you do this?

Soak the cartridges in the cleaner, rinse them, then put them back in place. This step often coincides with draining the spa.

💡 Tip to simplify your life

Purchase a second set of cartridges. You can remove the used cartridges, soak them, and immediately install the replacement set. This allows you to use your spa without interruption.

3. Cover maintenance

Cover maintenance is divided into two parts:

Cleaning and protection

Use a cover cleaner to clean and protect your cover.

Daily ventilation

You must lift the cover for 30 minutes every day. This is a non-negotiable step that allows the water and spa to “breathe.”

5. Pipe maintenance

Cleaning products fall into two main categories: cleaners and specialty products.

Pipe cleaning

A pipe cleaner helps remove deposits and biofilm that accumulate in spa plumbing, improving circulation and water quality. It is easy to use before draining: simply add it, circulate, then empty. The result: healthier pipes and more effective overall maintenance.

Drain the spa water regularly

Completely draining the water is necessary in these situations:

  • Periodic maintenance: every 2 to 4 months, depending on usage. (Rule of thumb: the more swimmers/weeks, the more often you drain.)
  • Persistent water issues: odors, stubborn foam, cloudy water despite adjustments.
  • After cleaning pipes/biofilm: to remove residues.
  • Contamination: product spills, heavy rain with overflow, hygiene incident.
  • Before hibernation or a long absence.
  • After major repairs (pump, plumbing).

Required material

  • Garden hose (or small submersible pump)
  • bucket/mop/sponge
  • mild non-foaming cleaner for acrylic
  • test strips
  • sanitizer
  • possibly chlorine/bromine neutralizer.

5. Maintenance products

Cleaning products fall into two main categories: cleaners and specialty products.

Sanitizing products

Choosing a sanitizer that suits your habits and your spa is the key to clear water, easy maintenance, and a more enjoyable everyday experience. The right product helps balance the water, reduces unpleasant odors, and optimizes your costs and time. To help you make a safe and informed choice, consult our guide to sanitizers.

Spa Cleaning: Tools and Best Practices

Proper maintenance begins with the right equipment. Take inventory of your kit: brush, skimmer, sponges, cleaning glove, telescopic handle, thermometer, and floating dispenser. Ensure everything is in good condition and within reach.

Tip: Quickly rinse tools with clean water and let them dry after use to extend their life. For an overview of the essentials and how to use them, see the Trevi spa maintenance kit.

  • Brush: for gently scrubbing the pool and waterline without damaging the surface.
  • Skimmer/net: removes debris from the surface or bottom between filtration cycles.
  • Absorbent sponges & glove: ideal for corners, headrests, and hard-to-reach areas.
  • Aluminum handle (3 sections): allows you to reach everywhere without bending over excessively.
  • Floating thermometer: to keep the water at the right temperature and adjust your usage cycles.
  • Floating dispenser (bromine/chlorine): regularly diffuses the sanitizer for clear water between treatments.
