When to replace your spa cover?

Listen to our expert Mathieu's explanations to help you determine if your spa cover is at the end of its life. (Video in french)

To install a spa cover support, you must first follow the steps provided by the manufacturer. Generally, you start by positioning the support arms on the spa's skirt to check the placement, then mark the mounting points. Next, screw the supports into the indicated locations using the provided hardware. It is important never to drill too deeply to avoid damaging the spa shell or plumbing. Once the support is secured, install the cover onto the lever and test opening and closing it a few times to ensure the mechanism works properly and everything is secure.

To remove a spa cover, grasp it on both sides and gently lift it, keeping it as straight as possible to avoid damaging the hinge. If your spa already has a cover lifter/lever, simply use the mechanism to tilt the cover backward. For heavier covers, especially when wet, it is recommended to have two people to prevent damage. To make daily handling easier and extend the life of the cover, purchasing a spa cover lifter/lever is highly recommended: it reduces physical effort, minimizes twisting of the cover, and improves user comfort.

To clean a spa cover, use a cleaner designed for vinyl covers. Wash the surface with a cloth or sponge, then rinse lightly. Once clean and dry, it's also advisable to open the cover regularly to allow the insulation to breathe and prevent unpleasant odors caused by accumulated moisture.

The vinyl remains a safe bet: waterproof, easy to care for, and economical. Sunbrella offer any further: a excellent UV resistance, a high-end textile look and a weight approximately 25% lighter (depending on the manufacturer's configuration).

For a high-performance spa cover, it’s important to choose a model with a high R-value, as this rating measures its insulation capacity. In general, aiming for an R-value between R-18 and R-21 is a very good benchmark.

This insulation should be paired with a thicker, higher-density internal foam (for example 1.5 to 2.0 lb/ft³), which makes the spa cover more durable and more efficient over the long term. A well-sealed vapor barrier is also essential to prevent the foam from absorbing water: the less water the foam takes in, the lighter, more insulating, and more energy-efficient the spa cover remains, helping your spa retain heat and stay economical to operate.

This is usually the spa cover vapor barrier which has given way, allowing the internal foam to absorb water until it becomes heavy. Once this happens, there is unfortunately no real lasting repair: the only fix is to replace the spa cover. Continuing to use it in this condition unnecessarily strains the cover lifter, increases heat loss, and significantly reduces the insulation performance.

  • Measure length × width (at its widest point), the corner radius (template or string/arrow method) and the skirt(fall).

A goodspa coverIt significantly reduces heat loss at the surface, helping to lower energy consumption and heating bills. It also limits evaporation and the entry of contaminants, resulting in more stable water and reduced chemical requirements. Finally, the spa cover's straps and locks add an extra layer of security and provide improved wind resistance.

To prolong the life of a spa cover, it's important to clean it gently with water and a mild soap, then rinse it thoroughly and let it dry. You can then apply a vinyl conditioner if the manufacturer recommends it, to protect it against UV rays and cracking.

In winter, snow should be removed regularly, and water should not be allowed to pool on the cover. Above all, do not sit on it to avoid damaging it. If the cover becomes very heavy (waterlogged foam) or begins to warp, it is a sign that it needs to be replaced, as this leads to energy loss and can compromise safety around the spa.
