Spring is the perfect time to take care of your sand filter. Despite the name, filter glass is used instead of sand, as it has superior filtration capacity.
Ideally, change the filter glass every three to five years. You can do it more often, especially if the water in your pool is having trouble staying filtered and clear.
But why should you do it in the spring? Because the plumbing is not connected yet and the filter is already empty. Still, you can do it at any time, even in mid-season.
Before starting, close the pool pump and remove the drain plug to allow the water to flow. In the spring, these steps are already done. Remove the collar from the filter’s head and lift the head.
Empty the filter glass with a workshop vacuum or do it by hand by tilting the filter on the side. It will just take a little longer.
Inside, you’ll see the lateral assembly. The laterals are the finger-like tubes at the end of the center pipe. You’ll need to fold or unscrew them to remove the assembly. Take this opportunity to inspect the center pipe to ensure there are no cracks. If this is the case, the filter glass could seep into the lateral assembly.
When everything is clean, replace the drain plug and fill the filter with water up to half its capacity to avoid damaging the lateral assembly when pouring the filter glass. The water will absorb the shock. Then, put the assembly back, unfolding or screwing the laterals one by one. The assembly must be centered in the filter. If you are two, one person can plug the center pipe while the other pours the filter glass. If you are alone, use tape to prevent the glass from seeping into the center pipe. Once the filter glass has been poured, put back the head and screw on the collar to close the filter.
These are simple steps to ensure that you’ll have good filtration for at least another three to five years.
When you go to the store to buy filter glass, write down the information on the label, or even better, take a picture of it. It will help us determine the right amount of filter glass to refill your filter.

If you notice sand at the bottom of the pool and you own a sand filter, that might mean the filter is leaking sand into the pool.
Although still often referred to as "sand filters", modern filters used ground quartz or glass sand as the filtration medium. If what you have at the bottom of your pool really is sand, then it is dirt and should be vacuumed out. On the other hand, if it is the filtration medium, you can scoop it up with your hands. It will fall to the bottom of the pool directly under the return pipe.
If you are unable to remove it with your hands, vacuum it and send the water into the street, where you'll see the glass sand coming out of the vacuum hose.
If glass sand is leaking into the pool, then the standpipe or laterals in the pipe are probably cracked or broken and need to be replaced. To see if that is indeed the case, change your filtration medium (consult our YouTube video to see how it's done).
Once the glass sand is removed from your filter, you can check the standpipe and laterals for cracks or damage. If they seem to be in good working order, it may mean that not only has the filtration medium been worn down to dust after many years of service, but it is no longer filtering contaminants and is also leaking back into the pool.

If this is your first time using the backwash hose, unwind it to its full length before use, and insert your garden hose to open up the tube and unstick it. This will prevent the backwash hose from bursting from the pool water pressure. Once done, fix the hose tip with a metallic collar.
When everything is in place, ensure that you shut off the pump before you change the position of the filter handle. When the motor is off, move the handle from Filtration to the Backwash position. Start the pump and let it run for about two minutes for a good cleaning.
When done, move the filter handle to the Rinse position. Let the pump run for about a minute. That’s half the time it will take to do the backwash.
After the rinsing is done, move the filter handle back to the Filtration position. At this time, this is a great idea to monitor the pressure on the gauge. Take the pressure gauge reading; this is your new natural pressure. Next time the gauge pointer exceeds the natural pressure from 5 to 10 psi, it will be time to do another backwash.

Inside, you’ll see the lateral assembly. The laterals are the finger-like tubes at the end of the center pipe. You’ll need to fold or unscrew them to remove the assembly. Take this opportunity to inspect the center pipe to ensure there are no cracks. If this is the case, the filter glass could seep into the lateral assembly.
When everything is clean, replace the drain plug and fill the filter with water up to half its capacity to avoid damaging the lateral assembly when pouring the filter glass. The water will absorb the shock. Then, put the assembly back, unfolding or screwing the laterals one by one. The assembly must be centered in the filter. If you are two, one person can plug the center pipe while the other pours the filter glass. If you are alone, use tape to prevent the glass from seeping into the center pipe. Once the filter glass has been poured, put back the head and screw on the collar to close the filter.
These are simple steps to ensure that you’ll have good filtration for at least another three to five years.
When you go to the store to buy filter glass, write down the information on the label, or even better, take a picture of it. It will help us determine the right amount of filter glass to refill your filter.

Pour le nettoyant à filtre, le procédé varie si votre équipement est près ou éloigné de la piscine. Pour un équipement à proximité, vous devez éteindre le moteur, ouvrir l'écumoire et verser le produit à l'intérieur. Le produit doit voyager jusque dans le filtreur, il faut donc rallumer la pompe. 5 secondes seulement suffiront et éteignez la pompe à nouveau. Le produit doit ensuite rester dans le filtreur et faire son action de nettoyage pendant 8 heures. Lorsque le produit a reposé le temps nécessaire, il faut l'évacuer en faisant un backwash (lavage à contre-courant).
Si l'équipement est éloigné de la piscine, le produit devra être versé dans la crépine de la pompe. Pour ouvrir la crépine de la pompe, référez-vous à notre tutoriel sur le nettoyage du panier de la pompe. Lorsque le produit est versé, rallumez la pompe jusqu'à temps que vous ne voyez plus de liquide rose à l'intérieur, ce qui voudra dire qu'il est rendu dans le filtreur. Une fois de plus, laissez agir pendant 8 heures.
Pour évacuer le produit, vous devez faire un backwash. Avant d'ouvrir la pompe, mettez la poignée en position backwash. Lorsque c'est fait, vous pouvez rallumer la pompe. Notez que ce backwash prendra plus de temps qu'à la normale, soit un 2 à 5 minutes, jusqu'à ce que l'eau soit suffisament claire. Il est donc important d'avoir un niveau d'eau plus élevé qu'à la normale puisque beaucoup d'eau sera évacuée durant ce nettoyage. Lorsque le backwash est terminé, éteignez la pompe et remettez la poignée en mode filtration et vous pouvez finalement remettre la piscine en marche.
Pour le Filter Brite, vous devez d'abord fermer la pompe, déposer le produit directement dans l'écumoire et ensuite rallumer la pompe jusqu'à ce que les cristaux ne soient plus du tout visibles. Éteignez la pompe et laissez le produit agir dans le filtreur durant 12 heures. Lorsque le trempage est terminé, placez la poignée en position backwash et une fois de plus, laissez le nettoyage à contre-courant se faire sur une période prolongée afin de bien éliminer le produit du filtreur. Éteignez la pompe à nouveau, remettez la poignée en mode filtration et finalement vous pouvez remettre la piscine en marche.
If you notice sand at the bottom of the pool and you own a sand filter, that might mean the filter is leaking sand into the pool.
Although still often referred to as "sand filters", modern filters used ground quartz or glass sand as the filtration medium. If what you have at the bottom of your pool really is sand, then it is dirt and should be vacuumed out. On the other hand, if it is the filtration medium, you can scoop it up with your hands. It will fall to the bottom of the pool directly under the return pipe.
If you are unable to remove it with your hands, vacuum it and send the water into the street, where you'll see the glass sand coming out of the vacuum hose.
If glass sand is leaking into the pool, then the standpipe or laterals in the pipe are probably cracked or broken and need to be replaced. To see if that is indeed the case, change your filtration medium (consult our YouTube video to see how it's done).
Once the glass sand is removed from your filter, you can check the standpipe and laterals for cracks or damage. If they seem to be in good working order, it may mean that not only has the filtration medium been worn down to dust after many years of service, but it is no longer filtering contaminants and is also leaking back into the pool.
It’s critical during the swimming season to maintain your sand filter by cleaning it. Together, we’ll go through the steps to perform what we call the backwash.
First, when should you do a backwash? The pressure gauge will give you the right indication. When the pressure on the gauge exceeds your natural pressure by 5 to 10 psi, it will be time to do a backwash.
Ensure everything is installed correctly before starting. What I’m holding in my hand is an adapter. At home, it’s already fixed to your filter outlet, this is where you’ll need to connect your backwash hose.
If this is your first time using the backwash hose, unwind it to its full length before use, and insert your garden hose to open up the tube and unstick it. This will prevent the backwash hose from bursting from the pool water pressure. Once done, fix the hose tip with a metallic collar.
When everything is in place, ensure that you shut off the pump before you change the position of the filter handle. When the motor is off, move the handle from Filtration to the Backwash position. Start the pump and let it run for about two minutes for a good cleaning.
When done, move the filter handle to the Rinse position. Let the pump run for about a minute. That’s half the time it will take to do the backwash.
After the rinsing is done, move the filter handle back to the Filtration position. At this time, this is a great idea to monitor the pressure on the gauge. Take the pressure gauge reading; this is your new natural pressure. Next time the gauge pointer exceeds the natural pressure from 5 to 10 psi, it will be time to do another backwash.
